Governor’s Mined Land Reclamation Award Awarded to Mid-States Materials, LLC of Lecompton

Mid-States Materials, LLC of Lecompton has been awarded the 2011 Governor's Mined Land Reclamation Award for their reclamation work at their Big Springs Quarry. The reclaimed area covers 44 acres in Western Douglas County.

Reclamation is the process of returning mined land to the best possible condition. The Governor's annual award is presented to companies that demonstrate excellence in implementing mined land reclamation and conveying a positive image of mining in Kansas.

"Mid-States Materials went beyond state reclamation requirements, creating numerous environmental and wildlife benefits on the reclaimed acreage," said Scott Carlson, Kansas Mined Land Reclamation Program Manager. The completed projects included wildlife food plots, reintroduction of quail, constructing wetlands and terraces, planting grasses and field buffer strips.

Mid-States Materials operates several quarry locations in Northeast Kansas. The Big Springs Quarry is a surface mine that extracts aggregate materials from the earth and manufactures high quality materials for the local construction industry.

The award was presented by David Kensinger, Governor Sam Brownback's chief of staff. Kensinger was also the keynote speaker at the Kansas Aggregate Producers Association meeting in Overland Park on Jan. 13, 2012.
